CAREL GODIN DE BEAUFORT
AND THE PORSCHE 718
Speed as a life's work, an immortal story
The legend of Jonkheer Carel de Beaufort: a noble rebel who changed motorsport forever. From aristocracy to the racetracks, Carel Godin de Beaufort wrote his own chapter in the history of motorsport.
From aristocrat to racing talent
Carel Godin de Beaufort, born in 1934, was the scion of a noble family that expected him to choose a distinguished career in diplomacy or business. But Carel followed a different path. In the 1950s he discovered his true passion: car racing. With his own Porsche 356 he started his career, despite his limited resources. He became one of the few self-made drivers who bought, maintained and drove his own car, which quickly earned him a reputation as determined and talented.
Breakthrough with the orange Porsche 718
His breakthrough came with the bright orange Porsche 718, which would become a trademark of his career. Despite competing against teams with huge budgets, he managed to stand out time and time again. The Porsche 718 was not only fast, but also a symbol of Carel’s daring and technical knowledge. Opponents were impressed by his driving skills and his daring style on the track. He raced against the biggest names in Formula 1, but still managed to compete and often surprise with limited resources.
The dangers of motorsport
Carel’s love of speed came with risks, however. At a time when safety was still a secondary concern in motorsport, he drove without fear and with enormous dedication. His passion drove him to ever greater heights, but also to the most dangerous circuits. Fate struck in 1964 during training for the German Grand Prix on the infamous Nürburgring. Carel was involved in a serious accident and later succumbed to his injuries. His death was a great blow to motorsport, which lost one of its most unique figures.
A lasting legacy
Although Carel’s career was tragically cut short, his legacy lives on. He was remembered as the driver who traded in his noble background for a life of speed, driven by his own willpower and passion. His achievements on the racetracks and his daring personality made him a legend in motorsport.
A tribute to a pioneer
Carel Godin de Beaufort’s impressive career and legacy are preserved in the Louwman Museum.
