Throughout May, the Louwman Museum is presenting two strikingly styled roadsters from BMW, the classic 507 and the youngtimer Z8. Although an age difference of no less than four decades, the museum shows the similarities between the roadsters.
For the classic of the future, the present often harks back to the past. So did BMW’s design department in the mid-1990s. Led by design chief Henrik Fisker, his team was tasked with paying tribute to the legendary 507 from the 1950s, without making it a remake of the handsome roadster. Fisker was allergic to retro design. And so a roadster with optional hardtop was created, featuring a long bonnet line, two seats against the driven rear axle and plenty of classic design details that so characterise the historic 507. It didn’t stop there, as the bloodline of the now quarter-century-old BMW Z8 is even greater. Still, there stands no copy of the now nearly 70-year-old automobile.
Come admire the two beauties at the Louwman Museum this month and see how history continuously marks the future. Plus,
Find out who was the most famous owner of a 507 ever and who had the honour of driving the Z8 even before production started. Our enthusiastic attendants will be happy to tell you about the special features of the silver roadsters.
The Louwman Museum is located at Leidsestraatweg 57 in The Hague and is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm.
