Fine Art On Wheels
Until 31 August 2025, the Louwman Museum is the stage for Fine Art on Wheels — an extraordinary exhibition where art and motorsport meet. Eight iconic BMW Art Cars, designed by world-renowned artists, are on display in The Great Hall. These aren’t just works of art — several of the cars have actually competed in races like the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
BMW 3.0 CSL (1975) – Alexander Calder
The very first Art Car, famous for its bold colours and dynamic shapes.
BMW 3.0 CSL (1976) – Frank Stella
A graphic masterpiece, turning the bodywork into a precise technical grid.
BMW 320i Group 5 (1977) – Roy Lichtenstein
Pop art in motion, with dots and lines that capture speed and energy.
BMW M1 Group 4 (1979) – Andy Warhol
Hand-painted in record time — the brushstrokes burst with energy. Raced at Le Mans in 1979.
BMW 730i (1990) – César Manrique
Organic lines and vivid colours inspired by nature and his native Lanzarote.
BMW 525i (1991) – Esther Mahlangu
The first female artist to join the project, bringing bold Ndebele patterns and cultural depth.
BMW M3 GT2 (2010) – Jeff Koons
A vibrant explosion of colour and motion, capturing the adrenaline of racing. Competed at Le Mans in 2010.
BMW 850CSi (1995) – David Hockney
A visual peek into the car — Hockney even painted the interior on the outside.
Now on view in The Great Hall
All eight cars are on display. The bright and spacious Great Hall offers the perfect setting to admire each design up close. This rare fusion of art and racing is on show until 31 August at the Louwman Museum. Open seven days a week.
