William Ladd Taylor, born in Massachusetts, studied in Boston and New York. In 1884 he went to Paris to study under Jules Joseph Lefebvre and Gustave Clarence Rodolphe Boulanger. He returned to the United States and during his career produced outstanding illustrations and paintings for books.
Taylor completed this piece for publication in the Curtis Publishing Company’s series “The Century in New England”. The scene depicts a stately lady boarding an electric town carriage on Washington Street as one looks towards Newspaper Row and Old South Church at the time.
