Lithography on paper
Charles Loupot was one of France’s most significant poster artists and a (private) painter. He experimented in typography and aerograph (precursor of airbrush) but his pioneering use of lithographic technique is most notable.
From 1911 – 1913 he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and after active service during the First World War he returned in 1917 to his childhood Lusane where he stopped painting and focused on poster design. In 1923 he returned to his origins in France and designed posters for printing house Devambez.
Loupot’s first impressive poster (one of many) in Paris was for the car company Voisin. He clearly demonstrated a knowledge of the French artist Paul Cézanne, whilst he also frequently adapted elements from Fauvism and Cubism.
