Société d’Automobiles Ernst & Cie Paris
Lithography on paper
Léon Louis Oury was a French poster artist with an artistic advertisement style. Lithography was his preferred artistic technique during the modern period in the nineteenth century and his most famous work is ‘Le Kosmos’ (ca 1895).
In this lithograph we can see a romanticised Jeanne d’Arc presiding over the Société d’Automobiles and the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. She is celebrating all kinds of automobiles and motorcycles as they triumphantly parade an imaginary avenue of victory in Paris. The automobile, the new heroine of the modern times, is here to stay!
