Rijwielen Tentoonstelling 1895
Lithography on paper
The RAI Association, in full ‘The Dutch Association for the Bicycle and Automobile Industry’ was founded on 17 December 1893 by bicycle manufacturers. What started as the RI, the ‘Rijwiel Industrie’ (‘The Bicycle Industry’) soon developed into the RAI in 1900, the ‘Rijwiel en Automobiel Industrie’ (‘The Bicycle and Automobile Industry’).
The RAI exhibition was a centralized, yearly, national forum for the promotion of bicycles and automobiles. The first Bicycle Exhibition (‘RI’) was held in 1895 in the Palace for Industry exhibition hall in Amsterdam, located on the Frederiksplein. The architect of the building, Cornelis Outshoorn, was inspired by the Crystal Palace in London.
