RAI Tentoonstelling 1922
Lithography on paper
The RAI Association, in full ‘The Dutch Association for the Bicycle and Automobile Industry’ was founded on 17 December 1893 by bicycle manufacturers. What started as the RI, the ‘Rijwiel Industrie’ (‘The Bicycle Industry’) soon developed into the RAI in 1900, the ‘Rijwiel en Automobiel Industrie’ (‘The Bicycle and Automobile Industry’).
The RAI exhibition was a centralized, yearly, national forum for the promotion of bicycles and automobiles. The RAI 1922 exhibition illustrated in the poster by an unknown artist was held in the RAI’s own new building on the Ferdinand Bolstraat in Amsterdam. The building, that can be seen in the background, was built in 1922 as a temporary location for five years but ended up housing the RAI for nearly forty years and became known as the ‘Old RAI’.
