L’Amortisseur Haubourdin
Lithography on paper
Jean Léon Henri Gouweloos was a Belgian painter, poster artist and lithographer. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels and was a student of Albert Charle and Jean Portaels. Gouweloos had a passion for painting landscapes, maritime art and seductive female nudes.
Here Gouweloos depicts a female harlequin admiring the Haubourdin shock absorbers (l’amortisseur) of an early French automobile. The quality of the shock absorbers is emphasized by the precariously balanced harlequin who even keeps her balance as the automobile drives over railroad tracks.
