Grandma’s First Ride
Oil on canvas
John Newton Howitt was born in White Plains, New York. He was a pupil of The Art Students League of New York and a member of the Society of Illustrators and the League of New York Artists shortly after World War One.
Howitt depicts the thrill and excitement as an elderly woman experiences her first ride in an automobile. Note the vibrancy of modern-day life in the colors of the painting in contrast with the darker colors used for the elderly woman and the past.
