Auto Polo
Oil on canvas
In 1902, Joshua Crane a motoring enthusiast in Boston founded a dangerous and wonderfully exciting game: auto polo. Originally, the “motor polo” car driver and player were the same person, but control and skill were soon found to be beyond the capabilities of one individual. Around 1904 a second participant was allowed in the car.
Numerous competitive teams were formed along America’s East Coast, but injury and disability to players resulted in states outlawing the game by 1924.
