Ausftellung Moderner Verkehrsmittel Berlin 1909
Lithography on paper
Julius Klinger was an Austrian painter, draftsman, illustrator, commercial graphic designer, typographer and writer. Klinger studied at the Technologisches Gewerbemuseum in Vienna. He transformed commercial visual culture through his innovative designs. Klinger’s art was associated with both the Vienna Secession and Jugendstil and he became famous as a poster designer in Germany. He had a signature style characterized by graphic simplicity and directness. He was also an advocate of ‘Americanismus’ and understood the power of modern trademarks and logos.
This is a promotional poster for the Modern Transportation Exhibition in Berlin in 1909. The use of a few bold colours that can be found in the German flag, and the graphic simplicity of a steering wheel tells the viewer all they really need to know. An illiterate audience was thus capable of also understanding this poster’s message.
