55 Years of Citroën SM – From 14 to 25 May 2026
The Louwman Museum presents the temporary exhibition 55 Years of Citroën SM. In collaboration with the Citroën SM Club Netherlands, a remarkable selection has been brought together, showcasing one of the most forward-thinking cars of the 1970s.
First introduced in 1970, the Citroën SM combined French design with Italian Maserati engineering. Fifty-five years later, this icon returns in the museum’s Great Hall, with models that are rarely seen together in one place.
Historic highlights
One of the centrepieces is the Citroën SM Présidentielle. This extended four-door convertible, built by Chapron, served for many years during official state visits by French presidents. Also on display is the Citroën SM once owned by Johan Cruyff. During his time at FC Barcelona, he drove this car daily, turning it into a symbol of style and success.
Rare coachbuilt versions
Alongside these well-known models, the exhibition features rare variants such as the “Mylord” convertible, the “Opéra” limousine and the futuristic “Espace” with its distinctive louvred roof. The sporting side of the SM is represented by the “Race”, while the “Frua” highlights the model’s Italian design roots. Looking ahead, the modern SM “Tribute” will also be presented, subject to availability.
The exhibition is the result of close collaboration between the Louwman Museum and the Citroën SM Club Netherlands. By combining curatorial expertise with the passion and knowledge of enthusiasts, the exhibition offers a complete view of the SM’s lasting impact on automotive history.
